Stage duration:1 Day

Day 2: Lusaka

We leave behind the excitement of Vic Falls and head off on our expedition. Our route towards the bustling Zambian capital of Lusaka takes us along an interesting route. We set up camp and enjoy the evening relaxing after our long drive. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Stage highlights:
A long drive takes us to the capital of Zambia – Lusaka. We may do some shopping here and there are limited banking facilities available. Remember – USD in small denominations are best on this tour.

Stage duration:1 Day

Day 3: Chipata

Today is an early start and a drive through southern Zambia. Chipata is an ideal place to take a walk to stretch the legs. The last 200km has big potholes, which make it slow going. Please be patient as we have to drive very slowly when there are potholes to prevent us from damaging the trucks.(Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Optional Activities: Mountain biking etc.

Stage highlights:
The drive from Lusaka to Chipata takes us over the Luangwa Bridge and through some beautiful countryside. We will stop for photos in a few places. Once we have arrived at the campsite you can arrange to hire mountain bikes and ride a short way down the gravel road that leads to the South Luangwa NP.

Stage duration:1 Day

Day 4 and 5: Luwawa Forest

Today we cross the border from Zambia into Malawi. We head for the Luwawa Forest, above the Great Rift Valley. You will remember this indigenous forest region for its magnificent scenery. A hike through the forest may reward you with a glimpse of some of its secretive wildlife. Keep your yellow fever certificates handy; you might need to show them at the border.(Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Stage highlights:
We cross the border in to Malawi and drive up in to the highlands to Luwawa Forest – this is part of the largest man-made forest in Africa. The altitude means that it can get very cold here on winter evenings. In the summer there are small sail boats that you can sail on the dam and there are some short and long hiking trails.

Stage duration:2 Days

Dat 6 and 7: Central Lake Malawi

We soon catch sight of the lake where we will spend the next couple of carefree days. For the more adventurous there are endless leisure and water sport activities. Alternatively, soak up the atmosphere and relax in one of the most scenic and memorable holiday destinations in Africa! The evenings are spent beside its tranquil waters, enjoying the party atmosphere of this famous spot.(Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Optional Activities: Scuba diving, parasailing, windsurfing, fishing, canoeing, horse riding and many more…

Stage highlights:
Today will be your first sight of Lake Malawi! Be very careful here as the mosquitoes are very bad. You might be very worried about bilharzia in the water. Bilharzia does exist in the lake but they haven’t found traces of it around Kande in recent years. You can go for a test 6 months after the tour – antibiotics will be enough to cure this! (Water from the showers is also from the lake!!!) There are many optional activities here such as horse riding, sailing, scuba diving and other water sports.

Stage duration:2 Days

Day 8 and 9: Northern Malawi

We continue a short way further along the northern part of the lake, close to the Livingstonia Mountains where we will continue our relaxation for the next day or two. Take a stroll through the nearby craft market and make friends with the friendly people of Malawi or take a hike into the mountains if the weather is favorable.(Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
Optional Activities: A wide variety of, craft shopping, hiking and more…

Stage highlights:
The adventurous can go hiking up to Livingstonia or the waterfall. This is quite a tough hike and you’ll have to leave early. The return trip to the waterfall takes about 5 hours and the trip to Livingstonia 7-8 hours. You must take lunch with you as well as enough drinking water, sunscreen, hiking shoes, hat. You should also take some money as they charge entrance fee to the museum at Livingstonia.
There is abseiling here too – it can be booked through Chitimba Beach Camp.
Alternatively you can just have a relaxing day at the lakeside.

Stage duration:2 Days

Day 10: Iringa

Today we make the border crossing out of Malawi. Leaving the lake behind us, we head for our first night in Tanzania and gain an hour as we cross into the East African time zone. As we climb out of the Great Rift Valley through some spectacular mountain passes, we pass the vast tea plantations in the highlands to our camp outside Iringa.(Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Stage highlights:
Tanzanian roads are in generally in a good condition, but they are also very narrow. This doesn’t slow down other heavy traffic though. In order for us to get to our destination safely the driver will have to drive slowly in places. This camp is at high altitude and can get cold.

Stage duration:1 Day

Day 11: Dar es Salaam

Our route takes us on a transit through Mikumi National Park to the historical port city of Dar es Salaam. We will go down a bad pass (tar uneven) and go through an area called Baobab Valley, before reaching our destination. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Stage highlights:
The massive boabab trees you can see en route.

Stage duration:1 Day

Day 12, 12 abd 14: Zanzibar

A transfer by ferry takes us to Zanzibar where we will spend the next few days exploring this fascinating island with its renowned architecture, beautiful beaches and colourful people and history. The excursion is at your own expense and this can vary depending on your preferred level of accommodation and activities. (Breakfast on day 12, thereafter own arrangement.)

Stage highlights:
The Zanzibar Excursion
Zanzibar is an amazing island and there are many things that you can do here – it is advisable to read a guide book before you go as well as speak to your guide so that you will get what you want out of this excursion.
We do not include Zanzibar as part of the organized tour as most people prefer to explore the island on their own, or with some of yournew friends from the tour.
There are banking and internet facilities on the island. Often the exchange rates for foreign currency and Travellers Cheques are better here than in Dar es Salaam but make sure you speak to the guide about how much money you will need before you change too much.
There are different ways to get to Zanzibar and your guide will tell you which is the best value currently. Remember that although Tanzania is officially a Christian country, Zanzibar is Muslim and if you are there during any Muslim religious holidays you should show the appropriate respect. It is not advisable for women to be dressed very revealingly as this could offend some locals. This is only a potential problem in Stone Town, if you stay at any of the resorts this is not a problem.

What to check before you go:
Before you leave make sure you check your Ferry tickets at collection – names, dates, validity, etc. They should be return tickets.
Have your yellow fever certificate and passport ready (they check these on arrival), don’t drink tap water on Zanzibar and if in doubt – ask the guide. One of the guides will accompany you to Zanzibar and they will let you know where they will be so that you can find them.

Stage duration:3 Days

Day 15: Zanzibar and Dar es Salaam

Today we reluctantly leave Zanzibar and catch a late ferry (or flight) back to Dar es Salaam and return to our campsite. The evening can be spent reminiscing back at the campsite. (Dinner)

Stage highlights:
We will return from Zanzibar in the late afternoon and swap our stories around the bar. Ensure that you bring all our possessions with you when you leave Zanzibar. We will leave early tomorrow morning for Lushoto.

Stage duration:1 Day

Day 16: Lushoto

Leaving Dar es Salaam behind us, we head inland and begin the long scenic climb towards Africa's highest peak Mt. Kilimanjaro. With half of the journey to Kilimanjaro behind us, we spend the night at our campsite where you can enjoy a walk and breathe in the fresh mountain air. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Stage highlights:
There are some Mountain Bikes available to hire in this highland area of Tanzania, alternatively relax here in the tranquil setting.

Stage duration:1 Day

Day 17: Arusha

Arriving at our camp outside Arusha, the safari capital of Tanzania, we settle in to our base for the exploration of one of the most abundant wildlife reserves in the world over the next couple of days. If it’s a clear day you might see Kilimanjaro. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Stage highlights:
This afternoon we will be arranging the excursion to the Serengeti (see below). Make sure that you speak with the guides about the different options and the different prices here. If you are not going in to the Serengeti then there are many day excursions that you can book with the campsite. One of the guides will be remaining in Arusha with the truck.

Stage duration:1 Day

Day 18 and 19: Serengeti and Ngorongoro

There are many options available, ranging from the one-day trip to the Ngorongoro crater, to a three-day trip into the Serengeti. As this is for your own expense, we give you every opportunity to match the activity to your budget. For those not going to the parks, take this opportunity to absorb some of the fascinating local culture. One of the guides will remain with those that decide to stay in Arusha.

Stage highlights:
Check on any special offers with your guides, in the off-season it is possible to stay in the lodges for a small additional fee of between $10 and $20 per person.

Stage duration:2 Days

Day 20: Arusha

Getting together again after our various game viewing activities in the game parks, we spend our last night in this beautiful country swapping 'big game' stories around the campfire. The groups normally return from the Serengeti excursion late in the afternoon. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Stage highlights:
Those that went on the longer excursion will arrive back on Arusha in the late afternoon,

Stage duration:1 Day

Day 21: Nairobi

After crossing the border into Kenya with Kilimanjaro receding into the distance, we continue on towards Nairobi and the end of our journey. The last evening on tour is normally spent out at a local restaurant celebrating the completion of our Nomad adventure! (Breakfast, Lunch)

Stage highlights:
We do not take people into town with the truck. The truck stays at camp and anyone that needs to go into town will have to take a taxi. Once in town you’ll realise the reason for this. Also: Please be warned about going around in Nairobi – it’s an extremely dangerous city. You must not walk around alone and please do not carry cash or expensive looking equipment on you.
